6 things you may not know about Tupac Shakur
1-Tupac was named after Túpac Amaru II, a Peruvian revolutionary who led an indigenous uprising against Spain and was subsequently executed.Tupac Amaru means “Shining serpent” in Incan Indian and Shakur means “Thankful to God” in Arabic.
2-Tupac was an avid reader, with some of his favorite authors to include: William Shakespeare, Niccolò Machiavelli, Donald Goines, Sun Tzu, Kurt Vonnegut, Maya Angelou, and Alice Walker.
3-Tupac is one of only three rappers to ever get a song (“Dear Mama”) added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry. The other 2 rap artists are Public Enemy and Grandmaster Flash
They met on the set of Above the Rim and became good friends. Marlon has said that being with Tupac wasn’t like being with this gangsta that everyone made Tupac out to be. He laughed and joked and had a good time,’ we used to go in the trailer and just crack jokes. We used to tease him and say he should cross out the T on his chest and change his image to HUG LIFE’
5 -Mickey Rourke
He was one of Tupac’s closest friends. In 1994 when Tupac was being trialed for different charges, Mickey was right there by his side. Mickey has a room in his house, dedicated to his close friends who’ve passed away. It’s a room filled with pictures of his friends. He has a small statue of the Virgin Mary on a table and a picture of him with Tupac next to it. He’s said over and over again that he owed his life to Tupac, that Tupac helped change him and from the news of Tupac’s death he kept changing because he knew that’s what Tupac would have wanted him to do.
6- A Vibe magazine poll in 2004 rated Tupac Shakur “the greatest rapper of all time” as voted by fans, and MTV ranked him at No.2 on their list of The Greatest MCs of All Time.
